It was first mentioned in 1407 as "Torjawasara". The words "târg" in Romanian and "vásárhely" in Hungarian mean market, showing that during the Middle Ages, Târgu Secuiesc used to be a market town.

Population

About 90% of the inhabitants are Székely, and the Hungarian language has co-official status alongside Romanian, with signage, access to public administration, justice and education provided in Hungarian also.
