According to the 2002 census, Romanians made up 60.03% of the population, Hungarians made up 38.09% and Roma made up 1.86%. The commune of Căianu is officially bilingual, with both Romanian and Hungarian languages being recognised officially and used in public signage, education, justice and access to public administration.
